| Design principle |
Thing to keep in
mind |
| KEY |
Who is your target audience? |
| Message |
Keep the message concise |
| Resolution |
Make sure that graphics look good at low resolution
(216 colors and 72 dpi) |
| Browser type |
Design your web site for the lowest common browser
type. (7% of our Internet users are still using Netscape 3.x.
Intranet users have been standardized to Internet Explorer 5.x.) |
| Navigation |
Make your web easy to navigate. The links should be
easy to understand. |
| Support the message |
Every graphic that you include on a page should
support the message. |
| Moderation |
Too much of a good thing can be bad (e.g., animated
graphics, fonts, colors) |
| Load time |
Make your web easy to download quickly (i.e., text +
graphics = 40 - 60K total page size for Internet use. Intranet usage
should be similar for dialup users.) |
| Graphics |
Use the 216-color browser-safe palette. Photos should
be saved in JPEG format. Clipart and other page elements should be
in GIF format. |
| Design Grid |
Internet design grids should be 600-pixel tables
unless target audience has been identified using the larger
750-pixel table.
Intranet design grids should be 750-pixel tables. |
